Pregnancy Related Low Back Pain

Daily Activities that May Cause Back Pain in Pregnancy

In addition to the conditions listed above, a few other factors can cause pain in the lower back or posterior pelvis. These factors typically include activities that create asymmetrical loading of the spine, pelvis, and hips. Common activities that load the spine in an uneven form include:

  • Walking and/or running
  • Rolling over in bed
  • Bending forward
  • Twisting the spine
  • Lifting objects off the floor
  • Navigating stairs

Taking Rest and Applying Heat Therapy Can Help

Taking short periods of rest during the day helps ease muscle spasms and relieves acute pain. While taking rest, keeping both feet elevated can help bend the hips and decrease the curvature in the lower spine.2

Using a heat patch in the lower back area and/or rear pelvis can help reduce soreness, decrease muscle spasm, and improve blood circulation. The heat source must be used for 15 to 20 minutes at a time and be of a tolerable temperature. Placing a barrier, such as a towel, is advisable to avoid burns.

Exercise!

Structured, specific exercise can be really beneficial.

Often we need to strengthen the deep core muscles to provide stability for the region. With increasing laxity of ligaments, increasing muscle strength can improve things.

Similarly, specific stretches can often improve muscle tightness, cramps and muscular fatigue which can occur. Therefore tailored, structured exercise such as pilates from an accredited health professional an often really help with symptoms.

Support/Bracing

Why does our brace help?

Often, the lumbar and pelvic girdle just needs support.

Long term we can improve the stability through strengthening exercises. However, the short term solution (for a short-term problem) is to apply a brace to the region to provide support and pain relief. Our three strap design, allows for best directional support in the best areas. It is comfortable to wear, easily applied, and can be worn discreetly under clothes.
